ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ikOankaar satigur prasaadh ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਆਸਾ ਘਰੁ ੩ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa ghar teejaa mahalaa pehilaa ||

Aasaa, Third House, First Mehla:

ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥

lakh lasakar lakh vaaje neje lakh uTh kareh salaam ||

You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances, and thousands of men to rise and salute you.

ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

lakhaa upar furamais teree lakh uTh raakheh maan ||

Your rule may extend over thousands of miles, and thousands of men may rise to honor you.

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥

jaa(n) pat lekhai naa pavai taa(n) sabh niraafal kaam ||1||

But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥

har ke naam binaa jag dha(n)dhaa ||

Without the Name of the Lord, the world is in turmoil.

ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

je bahutaa samajhaieeaai bholaa bhee so a(n)dho a(n)dhaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Even though the fool may be taught again and again, he remains the blindest of the blind. ||1||Pause||

ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

lakh khaTe'eeh lakh sa(n)je'eeh khaajeh lakh aaveh lakh jaeh ||

You may earn thousands, collect thousands, and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come, and thousands may go.

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

jaa(n) pat lekhai naa pavai taa(n) jeea kithai fir paeh ||2||

But, if your honor is of no account to the Lord, then where will you go to find a safe haven? ||2||

ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥

lakh saasat samajhaavanee lakh pa(n)ddit paReh puraan ||

Thousands of Shaastras may be explained to the mortal, and thousands of Pandits may read the Puraanas to him;

ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥

jaa(n) pat lekhai naa pavai taa(n) sabhe kuparavaan ||3||

but, if his honor is of no account to the Lord, then all of this is unacceptable. ||3||

ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

sach naam pat uoopajai karam naam karataar ||

Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

ahinis hiradhai je vasai naanak nadharee paar ||4||1||31||

If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||

Aasaa, First Mehla:

ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥

dheevaa meraa ek naam dhukh vich paiaa tel ||

The One Name is my lamp; I have put the oil of suffering into it.

ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥

aun chaanan oh sokhiaa chookaa jam siau mel ||1||

Its flame has dried up this oil, and I have escaped my meeting with the Messenger of Death. ||1||

ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

lokaa mat ko fakaR pai ||

O people, do not make fun of me.

ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

lakh maRiaa kar ekaThe ek ratee le bhaeh ||1|| rahaau ||

Thousands of wooden logs, piled up together, need only a tiny flame to burn. ||1||Pause||

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

pi(n)dd patal meree kesau kiriaa sach naam karataar ||

The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony.

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

aaithai othai aagai paachhai eh meraa aadhaar ||2||

Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2||

ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥

ga(n)g banaaras sifat tumaaree naavai aatam raau ||

The Lord's Praise is my River Ganges and my city of Benares; my soul takes its sacred cleansing bath there.

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥

sachaa naavan taa(n) theeaai jaa(n) ahinis laagai bhaau ||3||

That becomes my true cleansing bath, if night and day, I enshrine love for You. ||3||

ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

eik lokee hor chhamichharee braahaman vaT pi(n)dd khai ||

The rice balls are offered to the gods and the dead ancestors, but it is the Brahmins who eat them!

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥

naanak pi(n)dd bakhasees kaa kabahoo(n) nikhooTas naeh ||4||2||32||

O Nanak, the rice balls of the Lord are a gift which is never exhausted. ||4||2||32||

Aasaa, Fourth House, First Mehla:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥

dhevatiaa dharasan kai taiee dhookh bhookh teerath ke'ee ||

The Gods, yearning for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines.

ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥

jogee jatee jugat meh rahate kar kar bhagave bhekh bhe ||1||

The yogis and the celibates live their disciplined lifestyle, while others wear saffron robes and become hermits. ||1||

ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥

tau kaaran saahibaa ra(n)g rate ||

For Your sake, O Lord Master, they are imbued with love.

ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

tere naam anekaa roop ana(n)taa kahan na jaahee tere gun kete ||1|| rahaau ||

Your Names are so many, and Your Forms are endless. No one can tell how may Glorious Virtues You have. ||1||Pause||

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥

dhar ghar mahalaa hasatee ghoRe chhodd vilait dhes ge ||

Leaving behind hearth and home, palaces, elephants, horses and native lands, mortals have journeyed to foreign lands.

ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥

peer pekaa(n)bar saalik saadhik chhoddee dhuneeaa thai pe ||2||

The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world, and became acceptable. ||2||

ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥

saadh sahaj sukh ras kas tajeeale kaapaR chhodde chamaR le'ee ||

Renouncing tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures, some have abandoned their clothes and now wear skins.

ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥

dhukhe'ee dharadhava(n)dh dhar terai naam rate dharaves bhe ||3||

Those who suffer in pain, imbued with Your Name, have become beggars at Your Door. ||3||

ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨੑੀ ॥

khalaRee khaparee lakaRee chamaRee sikhaa soot dhotee keen(h)ee ||

Some wear skins, and carry begging bowls, bearing wooden staffs, and sitting on deer skins. Others raise their hair in tufts and wear sacred threads and loin-cloths.

ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥

too(n) saahib hau saa(n)gee teraa pranavai naanak jaat kaisee ||4||1||33||

You are the Lord Master, I am just Your puppet. Prays Nanak, what is my social status to be? ||4||1||33||
