ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਨੀਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
prathame teree neekee jaat ||
First, your social status is high.
ਦੁਤੀਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਨੀਐ ਪਾਂਤਿ ॥
dhuteeaa teree maneeaai paa(n)t ||
Second, you are honored in society.
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
tirateeaa teraa su(n)dhar thaan ||
Third, your home is beautiful.
ਬਿਗੜ ਰੂਪੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
bigaR roop man meh abhimaan ||1||
But you are so ugly, with self-conceit in your mind. ||1||
ਸੋਹਨੀ ਸਰੂਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ॥
sohanee saroop sujaan bichakhan ||
O beautiful, attractive, wise and clever woman:
ਅਤਿ ਗਰਬੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਕੀ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
at garabai moh faakee too(n) ||1|| rahaau ||
you have been trapped by your pride and attachment. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤਿ ਸੂਚੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਾਕਸਾਲ ॥
at soochee teree paakasaal ||
Your kitchen is so clean.
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਾਲ ॥
kar isanaan poojaa tilak laal ||
You take your bath, and worship, and apply the crimson mark upon your forehead;
ਗਲੀ ਗਰਬਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ॥
galee garabeh mukh goveh giaan ||
with your mouth you speak wisdom, but you are destroyed by pride.
ਸਭਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਈ ਲੋਭਿ ਸੁਆਨ ॥੨॥
sabh bidh khoiee lobh suaan ||2||
The dog of greed has ruined you in every way. ||2||
ਕਾਪਰ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਭੋਗ ॥
kaapar pahireh bhogeh bhog ||
You wear your robes and enjoy pleasures;
ਆਚਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਗ ॥
aachaar kareh sobhaa meh log ||
you practice good conduct to impress people;
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
choaa cha(n)dhan suga(n)dh bisathaar ||
you apply scented oils of sandalwood and musk,
ਸੰਗੀ ਖੋਟਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥੩॥
sa(n)gee khoTaa karodh cha(n)ddaal ||3||
but your constant companion is the demon of anger. ||3||
ਅਵਰ ਜੋਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
avar jon teree panihaaree ||
Other people may be your water-carriers;
ਇਸੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੀ ॥
eis dharatee meh teree sikadhaaree ||
in this world, you may be a ruler.
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਤੁਝ ਪਹਿ ਦਾਮ ॥
suinaa roopaa tujh peh dhaam ||
Gold, silver and wealth may be yours,
ਸੀਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਮ ॥੪॥
seel bigaario teraa kaam ||4||
but the goodness of your conduct has been destroyed by sexual promiscuity. ||4||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
jaa kau dhirasaT miaa har rai ||
That soul, upon whom the Lord has bestowed His Glance of Grace,
ਸਾ ਬੰਦੀ ਤੇ ਲਈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥
saa ba(n)dhee te liee chhaddai ||
is delivered from bondage.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saadhasa(n)g mil har ras paiaa ||
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Lord's sublime essence is obtained.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਓਹ ਕਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
kahu naanak safal oh kaiaa ||5||
Says Nanak, how fruitful is that body. ||5||
ਸਭਿ ਰੂਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਬਨੇ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥
sabh roop sabh sukh bane suhaagan ||
All graces and all comforts shall come to you, as the happy soul-bride;
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥
at su(n)dhar bichakhan too(n) ||1|| rahaau dhoojaa ||12||
you shall be supremely beautiful and wise. ||1||Second Pause||12||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਇਕਤੁਕੇ ੨ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ikatuke 2 ||
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla, Ek-Thukay 2 :
ਜੀਵਤ ਦੀਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat dheesai tis sarapar maranaa ||
One who is seen to be alive, shall surely die.
ਮੁਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
muaa hovai tis nihachal rahanaa ||1||
But he who is dead shall remain ever-lasting. ||1||
ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਏ ਮੁਏ ਸੇ ਜੀਵੇ ॥
jeevat mue mue se jeeve ||
Those who die while yet alive, shall through this death, live on.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har naam avakhadh mukh paiaa gur sabadhee ras a(n)mrit peeve ||1|| rahaau ||
They place the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, as medicine in their mouths, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they drink in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਚੀ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
kaachee maTukee binas binaasaa ||
The clay pot of the body shall be broken.
ਜਿਸੁ ਛੂਟੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
jis chhooTai tirakuTee tis nij ghar vaasaa ||2||
One who has eliminated the three qualities dwells in the home of his inner self. ||2||
ਊਚਾ ਚੜੈ ਸੁ ਪਵੈ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥
uoochaa chaRai su pavai piaalaa ||
One who climbs high, shall fall into the nether regions of the underworld.
ਧਰਨਿ ਪੜੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
dharan paRai tis lagai na kaalaa ||3||
One who lies upon the ground, shall not be touched by death. ||3||
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bhramat fire tin kichhoo na paiaa ||
Those who continue to wander around, achieve nothing.
ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
se asathir jin gur sabadh kamaiaa ||4||
Those who practice the Guru's Teachings, become steady and stable. ||4||
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jeeau pi(n)dd sabh har kaa maal ||
This body and soul all belong to the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
naanak gur mil bhe nihaal ||5||13||
O Nanak, meeting the Guru, I am enraptured. ||5||13||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ||
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:
ਪੁਤਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਟੀ ॥
putaree teree bidh kar thaaTee ||
The puppet of the body has been fashioned with great skill.
ਜਾਨੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇਗੀ ਮਾਟੀ ॥੧॥
jaan sat kar hoigee maaTee ||1||
Know for sure that it shall turn to dust. ||1||
ਮੂਲੁ ਸਮਾਲਹੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
mool samaalahu achet gavaaraa ||
Remember your origins, O thoughtless fool.
ਇਤਨੇ ਕਉ ਤੁਮੑ ਕਿਆ ਗਰਬੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eitane kau tum(h) kiaa garabe ||1|| rahaau ||
Why are you so proud of yourself? ||1||Pause||
ਤੀਨਿ ਸੇਰ ਕਾ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥
teen ser kaa dhihaaRee mihamaan ||
You are a guest, given three meals a day;
ਅਵਰ ਵਸਤੁ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਹਿ ਅਮਾਨ ॥੨॥
avar vasat tujh paeh amaan ||2||
other things are entrusted to you. ||2||
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਅਸਤ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਰੇਟੇ ਚਾਮ ॥
bisaTaa asat rakat pareTe chaam ||
you are just excrement, bones and blood, wrapped up in skin
ਇਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਲੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਗੁਮਾਨ ॥੩॥
eis uoopar le raakhio gumaan ||3||
- this is what you are taking such pride in! ||3||
ਏਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਕ ॥
ek vasat boojheh taa hoveh paak ||
If you could understand even one thing, then you would be pure.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਪਾਕ ॥੪॥
bin boojhe too(n) sadhaa naapaak ||4||
Without understanding, you shall be forever impure. ||4||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ॥
kahu naanak gur kau kurabaan ||
Says Nanak, I am a sacrifice to the Guru;
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥੫॥੧੪॥
jis te paieeaai har purakh sujaan ||5||14||
through Him, I obtain the Lord, the All-knowing Primal Being. ||5||14||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਇਕਤੁਕੇ ਚਉਪਦੇ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ikatuke chaupadhe ||
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla, Ek-Thukay, Chau-Padhay:
ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
eik ghaRee dhinas mo kau bahut dhihaare ||
One moment, one day, is for me many days.
ਮਨੁ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਿਲਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥
man na rahai kaise milau piaare ||1||
My mind cannot survive - how can I meet my Beloved? ||1||
ਇਕੁ ਪਲੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ॥
eik pal dhinas mo kau kabahu na bihaavai ||
I cannot endure one day, even one instant without Him.
