ਕਿਉ ਨ ਮਰੀਜੈ ਰੋਇ ਜਾ ਲਗੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥੧॥
kiau na mareejai roi jaa lag chit na aavahee ||1||
I might as well just die crying, if You will not come into my mind. ||1||

ਜਾਂ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਵਿਓ ਦੁਖਿ ਭੀ ਸੰਮੑਾਲਿਓਇ ॥
jaa(n) sukh taa sahu raavio dhukh bhee sa(n)m(h)aalioi ||
When there is peace and pleasure, that is the time to remember your Husband Lord. In times of suffering and pain, remember Him then as well.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਿਆਣੀਏ ਇਉ ਕੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak kahai siaane'ee iau ka(n)t milaavaa hoi ||2||
Says Nanak, O wise bride, this is the way to meet your Husband Lord. ||2||

ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਕਿਰਮ ਜੰਤੁ ਵਡੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
hau kiaa saalaahee kiram ja(n)t vaddee teree vaddiaaiee ||
I am a worm - how can I praise You, O Lord; Your glorious greatness is so great!
ਤੂ ਅਗਮ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
too agam dhiaal aga(n)m hai aap laih milaiee ||
You are inaccessible, merciful and unapproachable; You Yourself unite us with Yourself.
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੇਲੀ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਤੂ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
mai tujh bin belee ko nahee too a(n)t sakhaiee ||
I have no other friend except You; in the end, You alone will be my Companion and Support.
ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਤਿਨ ਲੈਹਿ ਛਡਾਈ ॥
jo teree saranaagatee tin laih chhaddaiee ||
You save those who enter Your Sanctuary.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ॥੨੦॥੧॥
naanak veparavaahu hai tis til na tamaiee ||20||1||
O Nanak, He is care-free; He has no greed at all. ||20||1||

ਅਵਤਰਿ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
avatar aai kahaa tum keenaa ||
Since your birth, what have you done?
ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਲੀਨਾ ॥੧॥
raam ko naam na kabahoo leenaa ||1||
You have never even chanted the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਮਤਿ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
raam na japahu kavan mat laage ||
You have not meditated on the Lord; what thoughts are you attached to?
ਮਰਿ ਜਇਬੇ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mar jibe kau kiaa karahu abhaage ||1|| rahaau ||
What preparations are you making for your death, O unfortunate one? ||1||Pause||
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਜੀਵਾਇਆ ॥
dhukh sukh kar kai kuTa(n)b jeevaiaa ||
Through pain and pleasure, you have taken care of your family.
ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਇਕਸਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
maratee baar ikasar dhukh paiaa ||2||
But at the time of death, you shall have to endure the agony all alone. ||2||
ਕੰਠ ਗਹਨ ਤਬ ਕਰਨ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
ka(n)Th gahan tab karan pukaaraa ||
When you are seized by the neck, then you shall cry out.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਆਗੇ ਤੇ ਨ ਸੰਮੑਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੧॥
keh kabeer aage te na sa(n)m(h)aaraa ||3||1||
Says Kabeer, why didn't you remember the Lord before this? ||3||1||
ਸੂਹੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ॥

ਥਰਹਰ ਕੰਪੈ ਬਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
tharahar ka(n)pai baalaa jeeau ||
My innocent soul trembles and shakes.
ਨਾ ਜਾਨਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਸੀ ਪੀਉ ॥੧॥
naa jaanau kiaa karasee peeau ||1||
I do not know how my Husband Lord will deal with me. ||1||
ਰੈਨਿ ਗਈ ਮਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
rain giee mat dhin bhee jai ||
The night of my youth has passed away; will the day of old age also pass away?
ਭਵਰ ਗਏ ਬਗ ਬੈਠੇ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhavar ge bag baiThe aai ||1|| rahaau ||
My dark hairs, like bumble bees, have gone away, and grey hairs, like cranes, have settled upon my head. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਚੈ ਕਰਵੈ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
kaachai karavai rahai na paanee ||
Water does not remain in the unbaked clay pot;
ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੁਮਲਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
ha(n)s chaliaa kaiaa kumalaanee ||2||
when the soul-swan departs, the body withers away. ||2||
ਕੁਆਰ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਰਤ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
kuaar ka(n)niaa jaise karat seegaaraa ||
I decorate myself like a young virgin;
ਕਿਉ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਭਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
kiau raleeaa maanai baajh bhataaraa ||3||
but how can I enjoy pleasures, without my Husband Lord? ||3||
ਕਾਗ ਉਡਾਵਤ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
kaag uddaavat bhujaa piraanee ||
My arm is tired, driving away the crows.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਕਥਾ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੨॥
keh kabeer ieh kathaa siraanee ||4||2||
Says Kabeer, this is the way the story of my life ends. ||4||2||

ਅਮਲੁ ਸਿਰਾਨੋ ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਨਾ ॥
amal siraano lekhaa dhenaa ||
Your time of service is at its end, and you will have to give your account.
ਆਏ ਕਠਿਨ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਲੇਨਾ ॥
aae kaThin dhoot jam lenaa ||
The hard-hearted Messenger of Death has come to take you away.
ਕਿਆ ਤੈ ਖਟਿਆ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
kiaa tai khaTiaa kahaa gavaiaa ||
What have you earned, and what have you lost?
ਚਲਹੁ ਸਿਤਾਬ ਦੀਬਾਨਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
chalahu sitaab dheebaan bulaiaa ||1||
Come immediately! You are summoned to His Court! ||1||
ਚਲੁ ਦਰਹਾਲੁ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
chal dharahaal dheevaan bulaiaa ||
Get going! Come just as you are! You have been summoned to His Court.
ਹਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har furamaan dharageh kaa aaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||
The Order has come from the Court of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਉ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਗਾਵ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਾਕੀ ॥
karau aradhaas gaav kichh baakee ||
I pray to the Messenger of Death: please, I still have some outstanding debts to collect in the village.
ਲੇਉ ਨਿਬੇਰਿ ਆਜੁ ਕੀ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
leau niber aaj kee raatee ||
I will collect them tonight;
ਕਿਛੁ ਭੀ ਖਰਚੁ ਤੁਮੑਾਰਾ ਸਾਰਉ ॥
kichh bhee kharach tum(h)aaraa saarau ||
I will also pay you something for your expenses,
ਸੁਬਹ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਸਰਾਇ ਗੁਜਾਰਉ ॥੨॥
subeh nivaaj sarai gujaarau ||2||
and I will recite my morning prayers on the way. ||2||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥
saadhasa(n)g jaa kau har ra(n)g laagaa || dhan dhan so jan purakh sabhaagaa ||
Blessed, blessed is the most fortunate servant of the Lord, who is imbued with the Lord's Love, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਈਤ ਊਤ ਜਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥
e'eet uoot jan sadhaa suhele ||
Here and there, the humble servants of the Lord are always happy.
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ਅਮੋਲੇ ॥੩॥
janam padhaarath jeet amole ||3||
They win the priceless treasure of this human life. ||3||
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
jaagat soiaa janam gavaiaa ||
When he is awake, he is sleeping, and so he loses this life.
ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਰਿਆ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
maal dhan joriaa bhiaa paraiaa ||
The property and wealth he has accumulated passes on to someone else.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇਈ ਨਰ ਭੂਲੇ ॥
kahu kabeer teiee nar bhoole ||
Says Kabeer, those people are deluded,
ਖਸਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲੇ ॥੪॥੩॥
khasam bisaar maaTee sa(n)g roole ||4||3||
who forget their Lord and Master, and roll in the dust. ||4||3||
