ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
teerath bharamas biaadh na jaavai ||
and wandering around at places of pilgrimage, the disease is not taken away.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
naam binaa kaise sukh paavai ||4||
Without the Naam, how can one find peace? ||4||
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
jatan karai bi(n)dh kivai na rahaiee ||
No matter how much he tries, he cannot control his semen and seed.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਨਰਕੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
manooaa ddolai narake paiee ||
His mind wavers, and he falls into hell.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧੋ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
jam pur baadho lahai sajaiee ||
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, he is tortured.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥
bin naavai jeeau jal bal jaiee ||5||
Without the Name, his soul cries out in agony. ||5||
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
sidh saadhik kete mun dhevaa ||
The many Siddhas and seekers, silent sages and demi-gods
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹਿ ਭੇਵਾ ॥
haTh nigreh na tirapataaveh bhevaa ||
cannot satisfy themselves by practicing restraint through Hatha Yoga.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਗਹਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
sabadh veechaar gaheh gur sevaa ||
One who contemplates the Word of the Shabad, and serves the Guru
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
man tan niramal abhimaan abhevaa ||6||
- his mind and body become immaculate, and his egotistical pride is obliterated. ||6||
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
karam milai paavai sach naau ||
Blessed with Your Grace, I obtain the True Name.
ਤੁਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਰਹਉ ਸੁਭਾਉ ॥
tum saranaagat rahau subhaau ||
I remain in Your Sanctuary, in loving devotion.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਉ ॥
tum te upajio bhagatee bhaau ||
Love for Your devotional worship has welled up within me.
ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੭॥
jap jaapau gurmukh har naau ||7||
As Gurmukh, I chant and meditate on the Lord's Name. ||7||
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਜਾਇ ਮਨ ਭੀਨੈ ॥
haumai garab jai man bheenai ||
When one is rid of egotism and pride, his mind is drenched in the Lord's Love.
ਝੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨੈ ॥
jhooTh na paavas paakha(n)dd keenai ||
Practicing fraud and hypocrisy, he does not find God.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨਹੀ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
bin gur sabadh nahee ghar baar ||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he cannot find the Lord's Door.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak gurmukh tat beechaar ||8||6||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh contemplates the essence of reality. ||8||6||
ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
raamakalee mahalaa pehilaa ||
Raamkalee, First Mehla:
ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਬਉਰੇ ਜਿਉ ਜਨਮੇ ਤਿਉ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
jiau aaiaa tiau jaaveh baure jiau janame tiau maran bhiaa ||
As you come, so will you leave, you fool; as you were born, so will you die.
ਜਿਉ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਕੀਏ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥
jiau ras bhog ke'ee tetaa dhukh laagai naam visaar bhavajal piaa ||1||
As you enjoy pleasures, so will you suffer pain. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you will fall into the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
tan dhan dhekhat garab giaa ||
Gazing upon your body and wealth, you are so proud.
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਹਿ ਕੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kanik kaamanee siau het vadhaieh kee naam visaareh bharam giaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Your love for gold and sexual pleasures increases; why have you forgotten the Naam, and why do you wander in doubt? ||1||Pause||
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਸਟੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
jat sat sa(n)jam seel na raakhiaa pret pi(n)jar meh kaasaT bhiaa ||
You do not practice truth, abstinence, self-discipline or humility; the ghost within your skeleton has turned to dry wood.
ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਜਇਆ ॥੨॥
pu(n)n dhaan isanaan na sa(n)jam saadhasa(n)gat bin baadh jiaa ||2||
You have not practiced charity, donations, cleansing baths or austerities. Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, your life has gone in vain. ||2||
ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ ॥
laalach laagai naam bisaario aavat jaavat janam giaa ||
Attached to greed, you have forgotten the Naam. Coming and going, your life has been ruined.
ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਧਾਇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲ ਗਇਆ ॥੩॥
jaa jam dhai kes geh maarai surat nahee mukh kaal giaa ||3||
When the Messenger of Death grabs you by your hair, you will be punished. You are unconscious, and have fallen into Death's mouth. ||3||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ ॥
ahinis ni(n)dhaa taat paraiee hiradhai naam na sarab dhiaa ||
Day and night, you jealously slander others; in your heart, you have neither the Naam, nor compassion for all.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੪॥
bin gur sabadh na gat pat paaveh raam naam bin narak giaa ||4||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you will not find salvation or honor. Without the Lord's Name, you shall go to hell. ||4||
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਵੇਸ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਟੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਪ ਮਹਿ ਗਲਤੁ ਗਇਆ ॥
khin meh ves kareh naTooaa jiau moh paap meh galat giaa ||
In an instant, you change into various costumes, like a juggler; you are entangled in emotional attachment and sin.
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਮਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੫॥
eit ut maiaa dhekh pasaaree moh maiaa kai magan bhiaa ||5||
You gaze here and there upon the expanse of Maya; you are intoxicated with attachment to Maya. ||5||
ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਥਾਰ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
kareh bikaar vithaar ghanere surat sabadh bin bharam piaa ||
You act in corruption, and put on ostentatious shows, but without awareness of the Shabad, you have fallen into confusion.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ॥੬॥
haumai rog mahaa dhukh laagaa gurmat levahu rog giaa ||6||
You suffer great pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be rid of this disease. ||6||
ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
sukh sa(n)pat kau aavat dhekhai saakat man abhimaan bhiaa ||
Seeing peace and wealth come to him, the faithless cynic become proud in his mind.
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਇਆ ॥੭॥
jis kaa ih tan dhan so fir levai a(n)tar sahasaa dhookh piaa ||7||
But He who owns this body and wealth, takes them back again, and then the mortal feels anxiety and pain deep within. ||7||
ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਮਇਆ ॥
a(n)t kaal kichh saath na chaalai jo dheesai sabh tiseh miaa ||
At the very last instant, nothing goes along with you; all is visible only by His Mercy.
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੮॥
aadh purakh apara(n)par so prabh har naam ridhai lai paar piaa ||8||
God is our Primal and Infinite Lord; enshrining the Lord's Name in the heart, one crosses over. ||8||
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਅਸਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
mooe kau roveh kiseh sunaaveh bhai saagar asaraal piaa ||
You weep for the dead, but who hears you weeping? The dead have fallen to the serpent in the terrifying world-ocean.
ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੯॥
dhekh kuTa(n)b maiaa gireh ma(n)dhar saakat ja(n)jaal paraal piaa ||9||
Gazing upon his family, wealth, household and mansions, the faithless cynic is entangled in worthless worldly affairs. ||9||
