ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੜੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਸਭਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਦੇਸਾ ॥

kaiaa a(n)dhar gaR koT hai sabh dhisa(n)tar dhesaa ||

Deep within the body is the fortress of the Lord, and all lands and countries.

ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਵੇਸਾ ॥

aape taaRee laieean sabh meh paravesaa ||

He Himself sits in primal, profound Samaadhi; He Himself is all-pervading.

ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਖੇਸਾ ॥

aape sirasaT saajeean aap gupat rakhesaa ||

He Himself created the Universe, and He Himself remains hidden within it.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਗਟੀਏਸਾ ॥

gur sevaa te jaaniaa sach paragaTe'eesaa ||

Serving the Guru, the Lord is known, and the Truth is revealed.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੬॥

sabh kichh sacho sach hai gur sojhee paiee ||16||

He is True, the Truest of the True; the Guru has imparted this understanding. ||16||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa pehilaa ||

Shalok, First Mehla:

ਸਾਵਣੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਅਹਾੜੁ ਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਦੁਇ ਖੇਤ ॥

saavan raat ahaaR dhih kaam karodh dhui khet ||

Night is the summer season, and day is the winter season; sexual desire and anger are the two fields planted.

ਲਬੁ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਦਰੋਗੁ ਬੀਉ ਹਾਲੀ ਰਾਹਕੁ ਹੇਤ ॥

lab vatr dharog beeau haalee raahak het ||

Greed prepares the soil, and the seed of falsehood is planted; attachment and love are the farmer and hired hand.

ਹਲੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਣ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਖਟੇ ਖਾਇ ॥

hal beechaar vikaar man hukamee khaTe khai ||

Contemplation is the plow, and corruption is the harvest; this is what one earns and eats, according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਅਉਤੁ ਜਣੇਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

naanak lekhai ma(n)giaai aaut janedhaa jai ||1||

O Nanak, when one is called to give his account, he will be barren and infertile. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਭਉ ਭੁਇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਬਲੇਦ ॥

bhau bhui pavit paanee sat sa(n)tokh baledh ||

Make the Fear of God the farm, purity the water, truth and contentment the cows and bulls,

ਹਲੁ ਹਲੇਮੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੇਤਾ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਵਖਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

hal halemee haalee chit chetaa vatr vakhat sa(n)jog ||

humility the plow, consciousness the plowman, remembrance the preparation of the soil, and union with the Lord the planting time.

ਨਾਉ ਬੀਜੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਬੋਹਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਦਰੋਗ ॥

naau beej bakhasees bohal dhuneeaa sagal dharog ||

Let the Lord's Name be the seed, and His Forgiving Grace the harvest. Do this, and the whole world will seem false.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਜੋਗ ॥੨॥

naanak nadharee karam hoi jaaveh sagal vijog ||2||

O Nanak, if He bestows His Merciful Glance of Grace, then all your separation will be ended. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

manmukh moh gubaar hai dhoojai bhai bolai ||

The self-willed manmukh is trapped in the darkness of emotional attachment; in the love of duality he speaks.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥

dhoojai bhai sadhaa dhukh hai nit neer virolai ||

The love of duality brings pain forever; he churns the water endlessly.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੋਲੈ ॥

gurmukh naam dhiaaieeaai math tat kaddolai ||

The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he churns, and obtains the essence of reality.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਟੋਲੈ ॥

a(n)tar paragaas ghaT chaananaa har ladhaa Tolai ||

The Divine Light illuminates his heart deep within; he seeks the Lord, and obtains Him.

ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੭॥

aape bharam bhulaidhaa kichh kahan na jaiee ||17||

He Himself deludes in doubt; no one can comment on this. ||17||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

salok mahalaa doojaa ||

Shalok, Second Mehla:

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥

naanak chi(n)taa mat karahu chi(n)taa tis hee hei ||

O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਰੋਜੀ ਦੇਇ ॥

jal meh ja(n)t upaian tinaa bh rojee dhei ||

He created the creatures in water, and He gives them their nourishment.

ਓਥੈ ਹਟੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

othai haT na chaliee naa ko kiras karei ||

There are no stores open there, and no one farms there.

ਸਉਦਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥

saudhaa mool na hoviee naa ko le na dhei ||

No business is ever transacted there, and no one buys or sells.

ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਅ ਖਾਣਾ ਏਹੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

jeeaa kaa aahaar jeea khaanaa eh karei ||

Animals eat other animals; this is what the Lord has given them as food.

ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਸਾਇਰਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

vich upaae sairaa tinaa bh saar karei ||

He created them in the oceans, and He provides for them as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥੧॥

naanak chi(n)taa mat karahu chi(n)taa tis hee hei ||1||

O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਝੀਵਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

naanak ih jeeau machhulee jheevar tirasanaa kaal ||

O Nanak, this soul is the fish, and death is the hungry fisherman.

ਮਨੂਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਪੜੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥

manooaa a(n)dh na chetiee paRai achi(n)taa jaal ||

The blind man does not even think of this. And suddenly, the net is cast.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

naanak chit achet hai chi(n)taa badhaa jai ||

O Nanak, his consciousness is unconscious, and he departs, bound by anxiety.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

nadhar kare je aapanee taa aape le milai ||2||

But if the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites the soul with Himself. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਾ ॥

se jan saache sadhaa sadhaa jinee har ras peetaa ||

They are true, forever true, who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ॥

gurmukh sachaa man vasai sach saudhaa keetaa ||

The True Lord abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; He strikes the true bargain.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੀਤਾ ॥

sabh kichh ghar hee maeh hai vaddabhaagee leetaa ||

Everything is in the home of the self within; only the very fortunate obtain it.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਤਾ ॥

a(n)tar tirasanaa mar giee har gun gaaveetaa ||

The hunger within is conquered and overcome, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

aape mel milaian aape dhei bujhaiee ||18||

He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself blesses them with understanding. ||18||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa pehilaa ||

Shalok, First Mehla:

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

vel pi(n)n(j)aiaa kat vunaiaa ||

The cotton is ginned, woven and spun;

ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥

kaT kuT kar khu(n)b chaRaiaa ||

the cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white.

ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥

lohaa vadde dharajee paaRe sooiee dhaagaa seevai ||

The tailor cuts it with his scissors, and sews it with his thread.

ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥

eiau pat paaTee sifatee seepai naanak jeevat jeevai ||

Thus, the torn and tattered honor is sewn up again, through the Lord's Praise, O Nanak, and one lives the true life.

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥

hoi puraanaa kapaR paaTai sooiee dhaagaa ga(n)ddai ||

Becoming worn, the cloth is torn; with needle and thread it is sewn up again.

ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥

maahu pakh kih chalai naahee ghaRee muhat kichh ha(n)ddai ||

It will not last for a month, or even a week. It barely lasts for an hour, or even a moment.
