Ang 956 of 1,430

ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥

sach puraanaa hovai naahee seetaa kadhe na paaTai ||

But the Truth does not grow old; and when it is stitched, it is never torn again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥

naanak saahib sacho sachaa tichar jaapee jaapai ||1||

O Nanak, the Lord and Master is the Truest of the True. While we meditate on Him, we see Him. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਸਚ ਕੀ ਕਾਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

sach kee kaatee sach sabh saar ||

The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True.

ਘਾੜਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

ghaaRat tis kee apar apaar ||

Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful.

ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥

sabadhe saan rakhaiee lai ||

It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad.

ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

gun kee thekai vich samai ||

It is placed in the scabbard of virtue.

ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥

tis dhaa kuThaa hovai sekh ||

If the Shaykh is killed with that,

ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥

lohoo lab nikathaa vekh ||

then the blood of greed will spill out.

ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

hoi halaal lagai hak jai ||

One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak dhar dheedhaar samai ||2||

O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਕਮਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਬੰਕੁੜਾ ਬੰਕੇ ਕਾ ਅਸਵਾਰੁ ॥

kamar kaTaaraa ba(n)kuRaa ba(n)ke kaa asavaar ||

A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse.

ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

garab na keejai naanakaa mat sir aavai bhaar ||3||

But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਸੋ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਲੈ ॥

so satasa(n)gat sabadh milai jo gurmukh chalai ||

They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥

sach dhiaain se sache jin har kharach dhan palai ||

Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth.

ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥

bhagat sohan gun gaavadhe gurmat achalai ||

The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging.

ਰਤਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਲੈ ॥

ratan beechaar man vasiaa gur kai sabadh bhalai ||

They enshrine the jewel of contemplation within their minds, and the most sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੯॥

aape mel milaidhaa aape dhei vaddiaaiee ||19||

He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||19||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

salok mahalaa teejaa ||

Shalok, Third Mehla:

ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

aasaa a(n)dhar sabh ko koi niraasaa hoi ||

Everyone is filled with hope; hardly anyone is free of hope.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

naanak jo mar jeeviaa sahilaa aaiaa soi ||1||

O Nanak, blessed is the birth of one, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||

ਮਃ ੩ ॥

mahalaa teejaa ||

Third Mehla:

ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਸਾ ਹਥਿ ਹੈ ਕੇਉ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

naa kichh aasaa hath hai keau niraasaa hoi ||

Nothing is in the hands of hope. How can one become free of hope?

ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਏਹ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਜਾਂ ਭੋੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

kiaa kare eh bapuRee jaa(n) bhuolaae soi ||2||

What can this poor being do? The Lord Himself creates confusion. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ॥

dhirag jeevan sa(n)saar sache naam bin ||

Cursed is the life in this world, without the True Name.

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਨੁ ॥

prabh dhaataa dhaataar nihachal eh dhan ||

God is the Great Giver of givers. His wealth is permanent and unchanging.

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਨੁ ॥

saas saas aaraadhe niramal soi jan ||

That humble being is immaculate, who worships the Lord with each and every breath.

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਅਗਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕੁ ਭਨੁ ॥

a(n)tarajaamee agam rasanaa ek bhan ||

With your tongue, vibrate the One Inaccessible Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥

rav rahiaa sarabat naanak bal jaiee ||20||

He is all-pervading everywhere. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||20||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

salok mahalaa pehilaa ||

Shalok, First Mehla:

ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਲਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥

saravar ha(n)s dhure hee melaa khasamai evai bhaanaa ||

The union between the lake of the True Guru, and the swan of the soul, was pre-ordained from the very beginning, by the Pleasure of the Lord's Will.

ਸਰਵਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਮੋਤੀ ਸੋ ਹੰਸਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

saravar a(n)dhar heeraa motee so ha(n)saa kaa khaanaa ||

The diamonds are in this lake; they are the food of the swans.

ਬਗੁਲਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

bagulaa kaag na rahiee saravar je hovai at siaanaa ||

The cranes and the ravens may be very wise, but they do not remain in this lake.

ਓਨਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਨ ਪਇਓ ਓਥੈ ਓਨੑਾ ਹੋਰੋ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

onaa rijak na pio othai on(h)aa horo khaanaa ||

They do not find their food there; their food is different.

ਸਚਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਚੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਮਾਣਾ ॥

sach kamaanai sacho paieeaai kooRai kooRaa maanaa ||

Practicing Truth, the True Lord is found. False is the pride of the false.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੌ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਪੈਯਾ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ॥੧॥

naanak tin kau satigur miliaa jinaa dhure paiyaa paravaanaa ||1||

O Nanak, they alone meet the True Guru, who are so pre-destined by the Lord's Command. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

mahalaa pehilaa ||

First Mehla:

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਉਜਲਾ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

saahib meraa ujalaa je ko chit karei ||

My Lord and Master is immaculate, as are those who think of Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ॥

naanak soiee seveeaai sadhaa sadhaa jo dhei ||

O Nanak, serve Him, who gives to you forever and ever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

naanak soiee seveeaai jit seviaai dhukh jai ||

O Nanak, serve Him; by serving Him, sorrow is dispelled.

ਅਵਗੁਣ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

avagun va(n)n(j)n gun raveh man sukh vasai aai ||2||

Faults and demerits vanish, and virtues take their place; peace comes to dwell in the mind. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

pauRee ||

Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥

aape aap varatadhaa aap taaRee laieean ||

He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself is absorbed in the profound state of Samaadhi.

ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤੀਆਈਅਨੁ ॥

aape hee upadhesadhaa gurmukh pateeaaieean ||

He Himself instructs; the Gurmukh is satisfied and fulfilled.

ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ॥

eik aape ujhaR paian ik bhagatee laian ||

Some, He causes to wander in the wilderness, while others are committed to His devotional worship.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥

jis aap bujhaae so bujhasee aape nai laieean ||

He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand; He Himself attaches mortals to His Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨੧॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ ॥

naanak naam dhiaaieeaai sachee vaddiaaiee ||21||1|| sudh ||

O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, true greatness is obtained. ||21||1|| Sudh||
