ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ

Guru Gobind Singh Ji (1666–1708) was the tenth Sikh Guru. In 1699 at Anandpur Sahib he established the Khalsa on Vaisakhi.

He affirmed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru of the Sikhs.

Parkash Purab dates may follow the Nanakshahi calendar (often 5 January) or a local lunar date. Check your gurdwara.

The next Parkash Purab on the SGPC / SikhNet Nanakshahi calendar is listed on the 2027 page.

History

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born in Patna Sahib. He received Guruship as a child after the shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, and later founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib.

In 1708 at Nanded he affirmed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru. Sikh practice treats the Granth, not a living person, as Guru after that day.

Significance

Parkash Purab marks the birth anniversary of the tenth Guru. Sangats gather for kirtan, katha, and langar. Local hours are set by each gurdwara.

How it is observed

Many gurdwaras complete an Akhand Paath so the bhog falls on the gurpurab.
