History

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born in Patna Sahib. After the shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji he received Guruship, later founding the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib.

Late 1704–05 is remembered for leaving Anandpur and the shaheedi of the Chaar Sahibzaade — a separate December cluster, not this Parkash Purab.

In 1708 at Nanded he affirmed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal Guru.

Significance

Parkash Purab is the birth anniversary. It is not Vaisakhi (the Khalsa founding) and not Shaheedi Week.

Harmandir Sahib and Patna Sahib hold large diwans. Sangats worldwide mark the day with kirtan, katha, and langar.

How it is observed

Many gurdwaras complete an Akhand Paath so the bhog falls on the gurpurab.

The sangat gathers for Asa di Var, kirtan, and katha of the tenth Guru.
