ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
aasaa mahalaa teejaa ||
Aasaa, Third Mehla:
ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸਾਦੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਭਾਈ ॥
aapai aap pachhaaniaa saadh meeThaa bhaiee ||
Those who recognize their own selves, enjoy the sweet flavor, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਚਾਖਿਐ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਭਏ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਸਾਚੋ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥
har ras chaakhiaai mukat bhe jin(h)aa saacho bhaiee ||1||
Those who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord are emancipated; they love the Truth. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮਨਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
har jeeau niramal niramalaa niramal man vaasaa ||
The Beloved Lord is the purest of the pure; He comes to dwell in the pure mind.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmatee saalaaheeaai bikhiaa maeh udhaasaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Praising the Lord, through the Guru's Teachings, one remains unaffected by corruption. ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਸਭ ਅੰਧੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
bin sabadhai aap na jaapiee sabh a(n)dhee bhaiee ||
Without the Word of the Shabad, they do not understand themselves -they are totally blind, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੨॥
gurmatee ghaT chaananaa naam a(n)t sakhaiee ||2||
Through the Guru's Teachings, the heart is illuminated, and in the end, only the Naam shall be your companion. ||2||
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
naame hee naam varatadhe naame varataaraa ||
They are occupied with the Naam, and only the Naam; they deal only in the Naam.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
a(n)tar naam mukh naam hai naame sabadh veechaaraa ||3||
Deep within their hearts is the Naam; upon their lips is the Naam; they contemplate the Word of God, and the Naam. ||3||
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
naam suneeaai naam ma(n)neeaai naame vaddiaaiee ||
They listen to the Naam, believe in the Naam, and through the Naam, they obtain glory.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥
naam salaahe sadhaa sadhaa naame mahal paiee ||4||
They praise the Naam, forever and ever, and through the Naam, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||4||
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
naame hee ghaT chaananaa naame sobhaa paiee ||
Through the Naam, their hearts are illumined, and through the Naam, they obtain honor.
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੫॥
naame hee sukh uoopajai naame saranaiee ||5||
Through the Naam, peace wells up; I seek the Sanctuary of the Naam. ||5||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
bin naavai koi na ma(n)neeaai manmukh pat gavaiee ||
Without the Naam, no one is accepted; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੬॥
jam pur baadhe maare'eh birathaa janam gavaiee ||6||
In the City of Death, they are tied down and beaten, and they lose their lives in vain. ||6||
ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
naamai kee sabh sevaa karai gurmukh naam bujhaiee ||
Those Gurmukhs who realize the Naam, all serve the Naam.
ਨਾਮਹੁ ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੭॥
naamahu hee naam ma(n)neeaai naame vaddiaaiee ||7||
So believe in the Naam, and only the Naam; through the Naam, glorious greatness is obtained. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
jis no dhevai tis milai gurmatee naam bujhaiee ||
He alone receives it, unto whom it is given. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Naam is realized.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੭॥੨੯॥
naanak sabh kichh naavai kai vas hai poorai bhaag ko paiee ||8||7||29||
O Nanak, everything is under the influence of the Naam; by perfect good destiny, a few obtain it. ||8||7||29||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Aasaa, Third Mehla:
ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨੑੀ ਨ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਪਿਰ ਕਾ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
dhohaaganee mahal na pain(h)ee na jaanan pir kaa suaau ||
The deserted brides do not obtain the Mansion of their Husband's Presence, nor do they know His taste.
ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਨਾ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥
fikaa boleh naa niveh dhoojaa bhaau suaau ||1||
They speak harsh words, and do not bow to Him; they are in love with another. ||1||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਵਸਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
eih manooaa kiau kar vas aavai ||
How can this mind come under control?
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਠਾਕੀਐ ਗਿਆਨ ਮਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadhee Thaakeeaai giaan matee ghar aavai ||1|| rahaau ||
By Guru's Grace, it is held in check; instructed in spiritual wisdom, it returns to its home. ||1||Pause||
ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਓਨੁ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
sohaaganee aap savaareeon lai prem piaar ||
He Himself adorns the happy soul-brides; they bear Him love and affection.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
satigur kai bhaanai chaladheeaa naame sahaj seegaar ||2||
They live in harmony with the Sweet Will of the True Guru, naturally adorned with the Naam. ||2||
ਸਦਾ ਰਾਵਹਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਚੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
sadhaa raaveh pir aapanaa sachee sej subhai ||
They enjoy their Beloved forever, and their bed is decorated with Truth.
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਮੋਹੀਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
pir kai prem moheeaa mil preetam sukh pai ||3||
They are fascinated with the Love of their Husband Lord; meeting their Beloved, they obtain peace. ||3||
ਗਿਆਨ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
giaan apaar seegaar hai sobhaava(n)tee naar ||
Spiritual wisdom is the incomparable decoration of the happy soul-bride.
ਸਾ ਸਭਰਾਈ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੪॥
saa sabharaiee su(n)dharee pir kai het piaar ||4||
She is so beautiful - she is the queen of all; she enjoys the love and affection of her Husband Lord. ||4||
ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਸਚੈ ਅਲਖਿ ਅਪਾਰਿ ॥
sohaaganee vich ra(n)g rakhion sachai alakh apaar ||
The True Lord, the Unseen, the Infinite, has infused His Love among the happy soul-brides.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੫॥
satigur sevan aapanaa sachai bhai piaar ||5||
They serve their True Guru, with true love and affection. ||5||
ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ॥
sohaaganee seegaar banaiaa gun kaa gal haar ||
The happy soul-bride has adorned herself with the necklace of virtue.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਰਮਲੁ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਵਣਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
prem piramal tan laavanaa a(n)tar ratan veechaar ||6||
She applies the perfume of love to her body, and within her mind is the jewel of reflective meditation. ||6||
ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਊਤਮਾ ਜਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhagat rate se uootamaa jat pat sabadhe hoi ||
Those who are imbued with devotional worship are the most exalted. Their social standing and honor come from the Word of the Shabad.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥
bin naavai sabh neech jaat hai bisaTaa kaa keeRaa hoi ||7||
Without the Naam, all are low class, like maggots in manure. ||7||
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਦੀ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹਉ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
hau hau karadhee sabh firai bin sabadhai hau na jai ||
Everyone proclaims, ""Me, me!""; but without the Shabad, the ego does not depart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸਚੈ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੮॥੩੦॥
naanak naam rate tin haumai giee sachai rahe samai ||8||8||30||
O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam lose their ego; they remain absorbed in the True Lord. ||8||8||30||

Aasaa, Third Mehla:
ਸਚੇ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
sache rate se niramale sadhaa sachee soi ||
Those who are imbued with the True Lord are spotless and pure; their reputation is forever true.
ਐਥੈ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਆਗੈ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
aaithai ghar ghar jaapadhe aagai jug jug paragaT hoi ||1||
Here, they are known in each and every home, and hereafter, they are famous throughout the ages. ||1||
