Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਸਿਆਹੁ ॥
janam janam kee is man kau mal laagee kaalaa hoaa siaahu ||
The filth of countless incarnations sticks to this mind; it has become pitch black.
ਖੰਨਲੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਉਜਲੀ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣਿ ਪਾਹੁ ॥
kha(n)nalee dhotee ujalee na hoviee je sau dhovan paahu ||
The oily rag cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed a hundred times.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਉਲਟੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਤਿ ਬਦਲਾਹੁ ॥
gur parasaadhee jeevat marai ulaTee hovai mat badhalaahu ||
By Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive; his intellect is transformed, and he becomes detached from the world.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
naanak mail na lagiee naa fir jonee paahu ||1||
O Nanak, no filth sticks to him, and he does not fall into the womb again. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲੀ ਕਾਂਢੀ ਇਕ ਉਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
chahu jugee kal kaalee kaa(n)ddee ik utam padhavee is jug maeh ||
Kali Yuga is called the Dark Age, but the most sublime state is attained in this age.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
gurmukh har keerat fal paieeaai jin kau har likh paeh ||
The Gurmukh obtains the fruit, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises; this is his destiny, ordained by the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak gur parasaadhee anadhin bhagat har uchareh har bhagatee maeh samaeh ||2||
O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, he worships the Lord night and day; he chants the Lord's Name, and remains absorbed in the Lord's devotional worship. ||2||

Pauree:
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਲੀ ਬਾਣਿ ॥
har har mel saadh jan sa(n)gat mukh bolee har har bhalee baan ||
O Lord, unite me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, so that with my mouth, I may speak the sublime Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਤ ਚਵਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਣਿ ॥
har gun gaavaa har nit chavaa gurmatee har ra(n)g sadhaa maan ||
I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and constantly chant the Lord's Name; through the Guru's Teachings, I enjoy the Lord's Love constantly.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਉਖਧ ਖਾਧਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਤੇ ਦੁਖਾ ਘਾਣਿ ॥
har jap jap aaukhadh khaadhiaa sabh rog gavaate dhukhaa ghaan ||
I take the medicine of meditation on the Lord's Name, which has cured all diseases and multitudes of sufferings.
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਹੀ ਜਾਣਿ ॥
jinaa saas giraas na visarai se har jan poore sahee jaan ||
Those who do not forget the Lord, while breathing or eating - know them to be the perfect servants of the Lord.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਚੂਕੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਣਿ ॥੨੨॥
jo gurmukh har aaraadhadhe tin chookee jam kee jagat kaan ||22||
Those Gurmukhs who worship the Lord in adoration end their subservience to the Messenger of Death, and to the world. ||22||

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਰੇ ਜਨ ਉਥਾਰੈ ਦਬਿਓਹੁ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗਈ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
re jan uthaarai dhabioh sutiaa giee vihai ||
O man, you have been tormented by a nightmare, and you have passed your life in sleep.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਿਓ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਚਾਉ ॥
satigur kaa sabadh sun na jaagio a(n)tar na upajio chaau ||
You did not wake to hear the Word of the True Guru's Shabad; you have no inspiration within yourself.
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਲਉ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
sareer jalau gun baaharaa jo gur kaar na kamai ||
That body burns, which has no virtue, and which does not serve the Guru.
ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲੰਦਾ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
jagat jala(n)dhaa ddiTh mai haumai dhoojai bhai ||
I have seen that the world is burning, in egotism and the love of duality.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥
naanak gur saranaiee ubare sach man sabadh dhiaai ||1||
O Nanak, those who seek the Guru's Sanctuary are saved; within their minds, they meditate on the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
sabadh rate haumai giee sobhaava(n)tee naar ||
Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, the soul-bride is rid of egotism, and she is glorified.
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਚਲੈ ਤਾ ਬਨਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
pir kai bhaanai sadhaa chalai taa baniaa seegaar ||
If she walks steadily in the way of His Will, then she is adorned with decorations.
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
sej suhaavee sadhaa pir raavai har var paiaa naar ||
Her couch becomes beautiful, and she constantly enjoys her Husband Lord; she obtains the Lord as her Husband.
ਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
naa har marai na kadhe dhukh laagai sadhaa suhaagan naar ||
The Lord does not die, and she never suffers pain; she is a happy soul-bride forever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak har prabh mel liee gur kai het piaar ||2||
O Nanak, the Lord God unites her with Himself; she enshrines love and affection for the Guru. ||2||
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥
jinaa gur gopiaa aapanaa te nar buriaaree ||
Those who conceal and deny their Guru, are the most evil people.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਨਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪਾਪਿਸਟ ਹਤਿਆਰੀ ॥
har jeeau tin kaa dharasan naa karahu paapisaT hatiaaree ||
O Dear Lord, let me not even see them; they are the worst sinners and murderers.
ਓਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਧਰਕਟ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
oh ghar ghar fireh kusudh man jiau dharakaT naaree ||
They wander from house to house, with impure minds, like wicked, forsaken women.
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
vaddabhaagee sa(n)gat mile gurmukh savaaree ||
But by great good fortune, they may meet the Company of the Holy; as Gurmukhs, they are reformed.
ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੨੩॥
har melahu satigur dhiaa kar gur kau balihaaree ||23||
O Lord, please be kind and let me meet the True Guru; I am a sacrifice to the Guru. ||23||

Shalok, Third Mehla:
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
gur sevaa te sukh uoopajai fir dhukh na lagai aai ||
Serving the Guru, peace is produced, and then, one does not suffer in pain.
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਕਾਲੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥
ja(n)man maranaa miT giaa kaalai kaa kichh na basai ||
The cycle of birth and death is brought to an end, and death has no power over at all.
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਚੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
har setee man rav rahiaa sache rahiaa samai ||
His mind is imbued with the Lord, and he remains merged in the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿੰਨ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਚਲਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak hau balihaaree ti(n)n kau jo chalan satigur bhai ||1||
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who walk in the Way of the True Guru's Will. ||1||

Third Mehla:
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਧੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰੈ ਸੀਗਾਰ ॥
bin sabadhai sudh na hoviee je anek karai seegaar ||
Without the Word of the Shabad, purity is not obtained, even though the soul-bride may adorn herself with all sorts of decorations.
